Farewell at the Airport
It was a quiet Sunday afternoon at Haneda Airport.
Kotaro and Maya stood near the international departure gate, watching planes ascend into the pale autumn sky.
“I can’t believe this day has finally come,” Maya murmured.
Kotaro nodded slowly. “It feels like just yesterday we were practicing simple greetings.”
Before long, Lucas and Lily appeared, pulling their suitcases behind them.
“You came to see us off,” Lucas said with a grateful smile.
“We wouldn’t have missed it,” Maya replied.
Lucas looked around the airport and said, “These past months in Japan have meant more to me than I can express. I didn’t just learn about the culture—I built friendships I’ll never forget.”
Maya’s eyes softened. “You changed our class too. We learned so much from you.”
Kotaro felt his heart pounding, but he stepped forward.
“I want to thank you,” he began carefully. “When we first met, I was afraid of making mistakes in English. But you always listened patiently. Because of you, I found the courage to speak.”
Lily smiled warmly. “You didn’t just find courage. You grew stronger every time you tried.”
Kotaro managed a small laugh. “Next time we meet, I’ll be able to speak even more confidently.”
The boarding announcement echoed through the terminal.
Lucas extended his hand. “Promise you’ll visit us in England someday.”
Kotaro shook his hand firmly. “I promise. And one day, I want to study abroad.”
As they waved goodbye, Kotaro felt both a deep sadness and a quiet determination.
Watching his friends disappear beyond the gate, he realized something important.
English had never just been a subject.
It had become a bridge — one that connected his world to something far bigger.
And this was not the end.
It was the beginning of a new chapter.

静かな日曜の午後、羽田空港。
コタローとマヤは国際線の出発ゲート近くに立ち、淡い秋空へ飛び立つ飛行機を見つめていました。

「昨日のことみたいだよ。簡単なあいさつを練習してたのが。」
やがてスーツケースを引いたルーカスとリリーが現れました。
「見送りに来てくれたんだね」とルーカス。
「もちろんだよ」とマヤ。
「この数か月、日本で過ごした時間は、言葉では言い表せないほど大切なものになった。文化だけじゃなく、忘れられない友情を築けたんだ。」
マヤは優しく言いました。
「私たちもたくさん学んだよ。」
コタローは胸の鼓動を感じながら一歩前に出ました。
「ありがとうって言いたい。最初は英語で間違えるのが怖かった。でも、いつも辛抱強く聞いてくれた。だから勇気を持てたんだ。」
リリーは微笑みました。
「勇気だけじゃないよ。挑戦するたびに強くなっていたよ。」
「次に会うときは、もっと自信を持って話せるよ」とコタロー。
搭乗アナウンスが響きました。
「いつかイギリスに来てね」とルーカス。
「約束する。いつか留学もしたい」とコタロー。
二人の背中がゲートの向こうに消えていくのを見ながら、コタローは気づきました。
英語はただの教科ではなかった。
それは、自分の世界を広げる“橋”だったのだ。
そしてこれは終わりではない。
新しい章の始まりだった。
