英語を勉強していると、「海外で実際に英語を使ってみたい！」と思ったことはありませんか？

Story 1

A New Chance

It had already been three months since Lucas and Lily returned to England. Although everyday life at school had gone back to normal, something still felt different to me. The excitement of meeting students from another country had disappeared, and I sometimes found myself thinking about the memories we had made together.

Lucas had taught me that making mistakes was nothing to be afraid of, and Lily had always encouraged me to speak with confidence. Because of them, English had become much more than just another school subject. It had become a bridge that connected people from different cultures.

One afternoon after school, I was putting my textbooks into my bag when I noticed Maya standing in the hallway. She was staring at the school bulletin board with an unusually serious expression.

Then, a moment later, her face suddenly lit up.
“Wait… What is this?” she said to herself.

Curious about what had caught her attention, I walked toward her.
Before I could say anything, Maya turned around with sparkling eyes.
“Kotaro! Come here! You have to see this!”

“What happened?” I asked as I walked over.
Instead of answering immediately, she pointed at a colorful poster on the bulletin board.
Across the top of the poster were the words:

Study Abroad Program in England

I read the title once, and then I read it again just to make sure I hadn’t misunderstood it.
“England…?” I whispered.

“Yes!” Maya replied excitedly. “Our school is starting a study abroad program! Students can visit England, improve their English, and experience life there!”

She could hardly hide her excitement.
“I’ve always wanted to study abroad,” she continued. “Can you imagine speaking English every single day?”

As I listened to her, I couldn’t help smiling.

Then Maya added something that made my heart beat faster.

“And maybe… we’ll get to see Lucas and Lily again.”

For a few seconds, I couldn’t find any words.

The thought had never crossed my mind before.

I looked back at the poster.

Could that really happen?

“If we go,” Maya said, “there’s a chance we might be able to visit their town or even meet them again.

My heart was filled with excitement.

At the same time, however, another feeling quietly appeared.

Anxiety.

“I’d like to go too,” I admitted.

“But…”

The words stopped there.

Maya looked at me with a gentle smile.

“But what?”

I lowered my eyes before answering.

“I’m still not very good at English.”

“I can read better than before, but speaking is completely different.”

“What if I can’t understand what people are saying?”

“What if I can’t answer their questions?”

“What if I make everyone uncomfortable because of my poor English?”

All the worries that had been hiding inside me suddenly came out.

Maya listened carefully without interrupting me.

When I finally finished speaking, she smiled warmly.

“Kotaro,” she said softly, “that’s exactly why you should go.”

I looked up in surprise.

“You don’t have to be perfect before studying abroad.”

“People don’t go because they already speak perfect English.”

“They go because they want to learn.”

Her words reminded me of something Lucas had once said.

“Making mistakes means you’re trying.”

I remembered how nervous I had been when I introduced myself in English for the first time.

Back then, I had believed that everyone would laugh if I made a mistake.

But no one had laughed.

Instead, everyone had supported me.

Even so, I still couldn’t make up my mind.

“I really want to go,” I said quietly.

“But… I’m still scared.”

Maya nodded kindly.

“I know.”

“There’s nothing wrong with feeling scared.”

She looked at the poster once more before turning back to me.

“Why don’t you take some time to think about it?”

“You don’t have to decide today.”

I nodded slowly.

As we stood in front of the bulletin board, I read the title one more time.

Study Abroad Program in England

The words seemed to shine more brightly than before.

Deep inside my heart, I knew this was more than just another school event.

It might become the biggest challenge I had ever faced.

And perhaps…

the beginning of another unforgettable adventure.

学校生活は以前と変わらない毎日に戻っていましたが、私にはどこか物足りなく感じられました。外国の友達と過ごした日々を思い出すことがよくあったのです。

「ずっと留学してみたかったの！毎日英語で話せるなんて最高じゃない？」

私は自然と笑顔になりました。

するとマヤがさらに言いました。

「それに……またルーカスとリリーに会えるかもしれないよ！」

その言葉に私は驚きました。

もう一度二人に会える……。

そんなことは考えたこともありませんでした。

本当にそんなことがあるのだろうか。

ワクワクする一方で、不安も込み上げてきます。

「僕も行きたい。」

そう答えたものの、言葉が続きません。

「でも……」

「何が心配なの？」

マヤは優しく尋ねました。

私は目を伏せながら答えます。

「まだ英語が得意じゃないんだ。」

「読むのは少しできるようになったけど、話すのは全然違う。」

「相手の言うことが分からなかったら？」

「質問に答えられなかったら？」

「僕の英語が下手で迷惑をかけたら？」

心の中にあった不安を全部打ち明けました。

マヤは最後まで黙って聞いてくれました。

そして穏やかに微笑みます。

「だからこそ行くんだよ。」

「完璧だから留学するんじゃない。」

「勉強したいから留学するんだよ。」

その言葉を聞いて、ルーカスの言葉を思い出しました。

「失敗するってことは、挑戦している証拠だよ。」

初めて英語で自己紹介した日のことも思い出しました。

あの時も失敗が怖かった。

でも、誰も笑いませんでした。

みんな応援してくれました。

それでも私はすぐには決心できませんでした。

「本当は行きたい。」

「でも……まだ怖い。」

マヤは優しくうなずきます。

「怖いと思うのは当たり前。」

「今日はすぐに決めなくてもいいよ。」

私は静かにうなずきました。

掲示板の前でもう一度ポスターを見つめます。
