The Woman with the Slit Mouth

It was a cold winter evening.

A girl named Anna was walking home from school.

The sun had already gone down, and the streets were almost empty.

Anna pulled her coat closer around her body.

She was walking through a small park when she noticed a woman standing near the entrance.

The woman was wearing a long coat and a mask.

She was standing completely still.

Anna felt a little uncomfortable, so she tried to walk past her without looking.

Then the woman spoke.

“Excuse me.”

Anna stopped.

“Yes?”

The woman slowly turned toward her.

“Do you think I’m beautiful?”

Anna didn’t know what to say.

The woman was wearing a mask, so Anna couldn’t see her mouth.

“Yes…” Anna answered nervously.

The woman smiled.

Then she slowly removed her mask.

Anna’s eyes became wide.

The woman’s mouth was cut from ear to ear.

“How about now?”

Anna couldn’t move.

She remembered an old story her grandmother had told her.

A woman with a slit mouth sometimes appeared at night.

Anna stepped backward.

The woman took one step toward her.

“Am I beautiful?”

Anna didn’t answer.

She looked around.

There was no one else in the park.

She suddenly remembered something her teacher had once told her.

If you are ever in danger, don’t panic. Think carefully.

Anna took a deep breath.

Then she smiled.

“You’re… very beautiful.”

The woman looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Yes,” Anna said.

“But I have one question.”

The woman tilted her head.

“What?”

Anna pointed toward the woman’s mouth.

“How did you get such beautiful lips?”

The woman touched her mouth.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she began to smile.

A very strange smile.

Anna suddenly ran away.

She didn’t look back.

She ran all the way home and locked the door behind her.

That night, she couldn’t sleep.

She kept thinking about the woman in the park.

Then, at midnight…

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Someone was knocking on her front door.

Anna froze.

She didn’t move.

Then she heard a woman’s voice.

“Anna…”

Her heart started beating fast.

The voice continued.

“Do you think I’m beautiful?”

Anna covered her ears.

Then came another voice.

This time, it was much closer.

“How about now?”

Anna slowly opened her eyes.

There was a woman standing outside her bedroom window.

She was wearing a mask.

And she was smiling.

Summary

口裂け女の有名なセリフである “Do you think I’m beautiful?”

Knock. Knock.
