Story
The Challenge Begins
A few days later, Kotaro and Maya finally submitted their applications for the study abroad program.
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
They simply stood there, looking at each other as if they were both trying to process what they had just done.
Kotaro let out a small laugh.
“I can’t believe we actually did it.”
Maya smiled broadly.
“I know! After all that worrying, we finally made it.”
Kotaro nodded.
Only a few days earlier, he had spent hours wondering whether he was capable of taking such a big step.
He had worried about his English, about living in another country, and about whether he would be able to adapt to an unfamiliar environment.
But now, at least one thing had changed.
He had stopped wondering what would happen if he tried.
He had actually tried.
For the first time, that felt like enough.
At least, that was what he thought.
The following day, however, their sense of relief didn’t last very long.
During lunch break, Maya hurried toward Kotaro with a piece of paper in her hand.
“Kotaro, have you seen this?”
Kotaro looked at the paper.
“What is it?”
Maya’s expression had changed.
She looked serious.
“It’s additional information about the selection process.”
Kotaro took the paper and quickly began reading it.
At first, he didn’t understand why Maya looked so serious.
Then he found the part that explained what would happen next.
All applicants are required to complete an English interview and a written examination.
Kotaro stared at the sentence.
For a moment, he froze.
Maya looked at him.
Kotaro slowly raised his eyes.
“The interview is… in English?”
Maya nodded.
“And so is the written test.”
Kotaro looked back at the paper.
He kept reading.
Then he found another piece of information.
His eyes widened.
“Wait. We only have one week to prepare?”
“Exactly,” Maya said.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
The excitement they had felt only a day earlier had suddenly been replaced by a mixture of nervousness and pressure.
“This is more challenging than I expected,” Kotaro finally admitted.
Maya folded the paper and sighed.
“To be honest, I’m nervous too.”
Kotaro looked surprised.
“You?”
Maya laughed quietly.
“Of course. Being excited about something doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to be nervous.”
Kotaro thought about her words.
Maya was usually the one encouraging him whenever he started to doubt himself.
Seeing that even Maya felt nervous made him realize something important.
Being brave didn’t mean never feeling afraid.
Sometimes, it simply meant continuing even when you were afraid.
Maya smiled at him.
“But we’re not doing this alone.”
Kotaro looked at her.
“We can prepare together.”
After a brief pause, Kotaro nodded.
“You’re right.”
He took a deep breath.
“We’ve come this far.”
He looked down at the paper once more.
“So, I guess we have no choice but to give it everything we’ve got.”
Maya’s eyes lit up.
“That’s the spirit!”
After school, the two of them headed straight to the library.
They found a quiet table near the back and placed their notebooks, textbooks, and study materials on it.
Maya looked at Kotaro.
“Let’s start with the interview.”
Kotaro swallowed nervously.
“Okay… I’ll do my best.”
Maya sat across from him and straightened her posture.
“Let’s imagine that I’m the interviewer.”
Kotaro immediately looked uncomfortable.
“Wait… right now?”
Maya smiled.
“Yes. The best way to prepare is to start.”
Before Kotaro could say anything else, Maya cleared her throat and adopted a more serious expression.
“Good afternoon. Could you please introduce yourself?”
Kotaro froze.
Maya raised an eyebrow.
“Kotaro?”
He quickly sat up straight.
“Oh! Right. Sorry.”
Maya laughed.
“Relax. This is only practice.”
Kotaro took a deep breath.
“My name is Kotaro. I’m a student, and…”
He stopped.
Maya waited.
Kotaro looked embarrassed.
“I already forgot what I was going to say.”
Maya smiled reassuringly.
“That’s exactly why we’re practicing.”
Kotaro nodded.
“Okay. One more time.”
Maya nodded and began again.
After practicing several basic questions, she moved on to a more important one.
“Why do you want to study abroad?”
This time, Kotaro was quiet for a few seconds.
He knew the answer.
But putting his thoughts into English was more difficult than he had expected.
Finally, he began.
“I want to improve my English…”
Maya nodded encouragingly.
“And?”
Kotaro thought for a moment.
“I want to challenge myself.”
Maya smiled.
“That’s a good start.”
She leaned forward slightly.
“But don’t just tell the interviewer what you want to do. Explain why.”
Kotaro thought about it again.
“I want to improve my English because I want to communicate with more people.”
He paused.
“And I want to study abroad because I want to experience a different culture and become more independent.”
Maya smiled widely.
“Much better!”
Kotaro looked slightly relieved.
“Really?”
“Yes. See? You already know what you want to say. You just need to learn how to express it.”
Kotaro nodded slowly.
That idea stayed with him.
Maybe speaking English wasn’t only about knowing the right words.
Maybe it was also about finding the courage to say something, even if it wasn’t perfect.
They continued practicing for hours.
They worked on possible interview questions, practiced introducing themselves, and helped each other correct mistakes.
Whenever Kotaro struggled to find the right words, Maya encouraged him to keep going instead of giving up.
And whenever Maya became frustrated with a difficult question, Kotaro reminded her that they still had time to improve.
Little by little, they began to realize that they were not simply preparing for an exam.
They were learning how to support each other.
Later that evening, they turned their attention to the written test.
The questions were more difficult than they had expected.
There were reading passages, grammar questions, vocabulary exercises, and short writing tasks.
Kotaro looked at one of the reading passages and sighed.
“This is going to be a tough week.”
Maya looked tired, but she smiled.
“It definitely will.”
Then she looked at Kotaro.
“But think about how much we could learn in just one week.”
Kotaro looked at her.
“We might be exhausted by the end of it,” Maya continued, “but I’m sure we’ll grow.”
Kotaro smiled.
“Yeah.”
He looked down at the books and papers spread across the table.
For the first time since receiving the news about the test, he no longer felt completely overwhelmed.
The challenge was still there.
The test was still only one week away.
And he still had a lot to learn.
But now, instead of focusing only on how difficult everything seemed, he was beginning to focus on what he could do next.
Kotaro closed his notebook and looked at Maya.
“So… are you ready for a tough week?”
Maya grinned.
“Absolutely.”
Kotaro smiled.
“Then let’s do our best.”
And with that, a new challenge had truly begun.
