Talking to My Parents
That evening, after returning home from school, I went straight to my room.
The study abroad application form was lying on my desk, exactly where I had left it the night before.
I sat down in my chair and stared at it for a long time.
Just a day earlier, I had finally made up my mind to apply for the program.
For the first time, I felt excited about the future.
However, there was still one important thing I had to do.
I needed to talk to my parents.
Although I had already decided what I wanted, I couldn’t stop feeling nervous.
What would they say?
Would they think I was being unrealistic?
Would they worry too much about me living in another country?
As those questions filled my mind, I glanced at the application form once more.
The deadline was approaching, and I knew I couldn’t keep postponing the conversation.
After dinner, I slowly walked toward the living room.
My parents were sitting on the sofa, watching television as usual.
For a moment, I almost turned around and went back to my room.
But then I remembered the promise I had made to myself.
I didn’t want to run away anymore.
“Um… can I talk to you about something?” I asked.
My parents immediately looked at me.
“Of course,” my mother replied.
“You sound serious.”
I sat down across from them and took a deep breath.
“There is a study abroad program at school,” I began.
My parents listened carefully.
“It’s a program in England.”
“And… I’d like to apply.”
For a few seconds, neither of them said anything.
Then my father raised his eyebrows slightly.
“England?” he asked.
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“I want to improve my English.”
I paused for a moment before continuing.
“And I want to challenge myself.”
My parents exchanged a quick glance.
I could tell they were surprised.
After all, I wasn’t the type of person who usually talked about studying abroad.
Growing up, I had always preferred staying inside my comfort zone.
Trying something completely new was never easy for me.
My father leaned forward slightly.
“Studying abroad isn’t a simple decision,” he said calmly.
“You’ll be far away from home.”
“You’ll have to communicate in English every day.”
“There will probably be difficult moments.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
His concerns were exactly the same concerns I had been thinking about.
But this time, my answer was different.
“I know it won’t be easy,” I said.
“Honestly, I’m still scared.”
“There are many things I’m worried about.”
“But I want to try.”
The room became quiet.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my mother smiled gently.
“Kotaro,” she said, “you’ve changed.”
I looked at her in surprise.
“Changed?”
She nodded.
“When you were younger, you were always afraid of new things.”
“You preferred staying where you felt safe.”
I couldn’t deny it.
She was absolutely right.
Even joining English activities at school had once felt impossible.
“But now,” she continued, “you’re talking about traveling to another country.”
“That takes courage.”
A small smile appeared on my face.
“I’m still afraid,” I admitted.
“But I don’t want fear to decide my future anymore.”
My parents looked at me quietly.
For the first time, I felt that they could see how serious I was.
My father crossed his arms and thought for a moment.
Then, slowly, he smiled.
“If this is something you truly want to do, we’ll support you.”
For a second, I wasn’t sure if I had heard him correctly.
“Really?” I asked.
“Of course,” my mother replied immediately.
“We believe in you.”
Those words meant more to me than I could explain.
The nervous feeling that had been inside me all evening suddenly disappeared.
Instead, I felt relieved.
And grateful.
“Thank you,” I said.
“I’ll do my best.”
As I looked at my parents, I realized something important.
Taking a step toward your dream becomes much easier when you know there are people who believe in you.
That night, I went back to my room feeling lighter than I had in weeks.
The challenge ahead was still huge.
But now, I wasn’t facing it alone.
