Test Day
The day of the interview had finally arrived.
As I walked through the school gate that morning, my stomach was full of butterflies.
Although Maya and I had spent the past week practicing every day, I still couldn’t stop feeling nervous.
No matter how many times I told myself that everything would be fine, my heart kept beating faster.
When I reached the classroom where the interviews would take place, Maya was already waiting outside.
She smiled as soon as she saw me.
“Good morning.”
“Morning,” I replied, forcing a smile.
“You look nervous.”
“I am.”
“So do you,” I said.
She laughed quietly.
“I guess neither of us slept very well.”
That made me smile.
Knowing that Maya felt the same way somehow made me feel a little better.
Just then, our English teacher opened the classroom door.
“Good morning, everyone,” she said.
“The interviews will begin in a few minutes.”
“Please relax and do your best.”
I took a deep breath.
Relaxing was much easier to say than to do.
A few minutes later, the teacher looked at her list.
“Maya Tanaka.”
“You’re first.”
Maya stood up immediately.
She looked calm, but I could tell she was trying to hide her nervousness.
Before entering the room, she turned around.
“I’ll see you soon.”
“Good luck,” I said.
“You’ve got this.”
She smiled confidently before disappearing into the classroom.
Suddenly, the hallway became much quieter.
I sat alone on the chair outside the interview room.
Every minute felt much longer than usual.
I could hear faint voices through the closed door, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying.
I wondered what kinds of questions Maya was being asked.
I also wondered whether I would be able to answer them.
The more I thought about it, the more anxious I became.
Finally, the door opened.
Maya walked out with a relieved smile.
“How did it go?” I asked immediately.
She let out a long breath.
“I was really nervous.”
“But once I started speaking, I felt much better.”
“I made a few mistakes,” she admitted.
“But I answered every question.”
Hearing that gave me a little confidence.
Maybe making mistakes wasn’t the end of the world after all.
Then the teacher looked toward me.
“Kotaro Sato.”
“It’s your turn.”
For a brief moment, I felt my legs become weak.
This was it.
I slowly stood up.
As I walked toward the classroom door, Maya smiled at me.
“You’ll be fine.”
“Just be yourself.”
I nodded quietly.
Those simple words gave me courage.
I opened the door and stepped inside.
Two teachers were sitting across from an empty chair.
“Good morning,” one of them said kindly.
“Please have a seat.”
I greeted them and sat down.
Although I was trying to stay calm, I could hear my own heartbeat.
The interview began with a few simple questions.
“What is your name?”
“What are your hobbies?”
I answered them without too much difficulty.
Then came the question I had practiced the most.
“Why do you want to study abroad?”
I took a deep breath before answering.
“I want to improve my English.”
“And I’d like to experience another culture.”
I paused for a second, searching for the right words.
“I also want to challenge myself.”
My grammar wasn’t perfect.
I accidentally used the wrong tense once.
There were moments when I had to stop and think.
But I remembered what Maya had told me.
Keep speaking.
So I continued.
Instead of worrying about every mistake, I focused on sharing my thoughts honestly.
When the interview finally ended, one of the teachers smiled.
“Thank you, Kotaro.”
“You spoke with sincerity.”
Those words stayed with me as I left the room.
For the first time that day, I felt proud of myself.
Maybe I hadn’t spoken perfect English.
But I had done something much more important.
I hadn’t given up.
